Edwards Woods Estate
The task was to extend the life of three 1960s residential tower blocks by significantly improving the insulation, thereby increasing thermal comfort and making the flats more economical for residents to heat. The solution also had to improve the external appearance of the buildings, enhancing the local environment and stimulating the regeneration of the estate.
The ROCKWOOL Solution
As part of an 18-month comprehensive repair and improvement programme undertaken by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (LBHF), numerous ROCKWOOL insulation products were featured in the £12.2 million makeover of three 24-storey tower blocks on the Edward Woods Estate.
The refurbishment was designed by ECD Architects, in consultation with residents, and supported throughout by ROCKWOOL technical and energy efficiency experts. ROCKWOOL BuildDesk software was used to calculate potential heat losses at the outset of the project. The team also helped LHBF to secure grant funding for the refurbishment.
As well as filling the cavity walls with granular insulation, the external walls were also clad with ROCKPANEL Rockclad Xtreme board to further reduce heat loss and give a fresh, clean appearance. On the narrower north and south elevations, the existing brick cladding was stripped away and filled with ROCKWOOL FLEXI® insulation. Rather than replace the bricks, an energy-efficient lightweight steel frame system was installed and filled with a further 100mm of ROCKWOOL FLEXI® and a 90 mm thick ROCKSHIELD® external wall insulation system was then applied.
On the south-facing elevation ROCKSHIELD® insulation has been integrated with 318 photovoltaic (PV) panels which are expected to generate 85 000 kWh of electricity a year. The renewable electricity generated will provide power to operate communal lifts, CCTV, lighting and the alarm systems.
At the top of each block new, highly insulated penthouse flats have been constructed. These incorporate walls with 300mm thick ROCKWOOL® FLEXI® insulation faced with ROCKPANEL® wood finish cladding to achieve an impressive U-value of 0.15 W/m2K. The penthouse roofs are insulated to the same value using ROCKWOOL flat-roof insulation. The scheme will also incorporate ROCKFON ceiling tiles for acoustic protection.
The challenge The design of the O2 arena’s roof had to incorporate state-of-the-art acoustic engineering to eliminate virtually all nuisance ambient noise (bass thumping) outside the arena while ensuring fantastic acoustics inside the structure.
