Code for Sustainable Homes and zero carbon building

  • The Code for Sustainable Homes is a comprehensive measure of sustainability to ensure that new homes deliver real improvements in key areas to carve the path towards low and zero carbon homes
  • New developments are assessed in several key areas and assigned a level from 1-6 as a performance measure, where level 6 is known as zero carbon
  • A fundamental aspect of the zero carbon approach is to design in high levels of energy efficiency in the fabric of the home

CLG, the department for Communities and Local Government, introduced the Code for Sustainable Homes, a new national standard for the sustainable design and construction of new homes, to drive improvements in home building practice.

Step changes to building regulations from 2010 onwards will mean new-build homes will have to conform to ever increasing levels of energy efficient performance.  With the government commitment to increase housing supply to reach up to 240,000 new homes per year by 2016, there is a great opportunity to significantly decrease the impact these new homes will have on our environment.
