What is the difference between RainScreen Duo Slab and RWA45 when fitted behind a rainscreen cladding system?

1. Are there suitable Rockwool products for insulating a loft conversion, or a heritage timber building?

Easy to cut and shape, Rockwool flexible, semi rigid, and rigid slabs are suitable for these types of projects. They can be used to create thermal insulation, fire protection, and acoustic improvements. Slabs should be cut just a fraction larger than the width between studs, rafters, or other timbers and then friction fitted into the section to be insulated. Rockwool is particularly suitable for frames, which flex with temperature or age distortion. While all Rockwool insulation is vapour permeable and can allow structures to breathe, you must decide if a vapour check is necessary. If it is, it should be fitted against the warm side of the insulant.

2. What happens if Rockwool gets wet?

If Rockwool is allowed to dry out naturally before other finish are applied it will regain its original properties provided that:

. the product has not been signifantly compressed or otherwise damaged when wet or

. no contamination or degradation has occurred to the product as a result of harmful chemicals being presented in the water.

3. How long does it take for Rockwool to dry out?

The duration of the drying process will depend on the amount of water absorbed by the product, and the degree of ventilation, temperature and humidity of the atmosphere. Therefore, as all these conditions can vary, it is impossible to estimate with any accuracy the drying out time.

4. How long can RainScreen Duo Slab be left exposed?

In typical weather conditions Rockwool Rainscreen Duo-Slab can be left exposed, once fitted to shell of the building, for periods up to 3 months, if installed in accordance with relevant data sheet for the Rockwool product. This is due to the higher density (patterned) layer of the product, which should always be facing outwards when installed.

If the insulation becomes wet during the exposed period, it will dry out when the rainscreen system is installed and regain its original properties. The drying out period will vary according to temperature, humidity and degree of ventilation behind the cladding system.

5. What is the difference between RainScreen Duo Slab and RWA45 when fitted behind a rainscreen cladding system?

. Rockwool Rainscreen Duo-slab has been specifically designed and tested for use in rain-screen and over-cladding applications. It is a dual density product and this produces a tougher outer surface capable of improved weather resistance, enabling the product to be installed and left exposed for extended periods before the over-cladding is applied. The product has been successfully tested by the Building Research Centre for wind resistance during construction, when fitted in accordance with its data sheet.

. Rockwool RWA45 is a general purpose, single density product.  If it is incorporated into a rain-screen application, then we recommend that the product is covered by the over-cladding system or a breather membrane before the insulation is subjected to rain or high winds. As this product is for general use, no specific recommendations are given for the frequency and type of fixings required – this would need to be determined by the Specifier/Contractor and would depend on the height of the building and degree of exposure.
