SEPARATING & INTERNAL FLOOR  SOLUTIONS
Separating Floors

When  insulating internal floors, it is important to ensure that the building meets with the appropriate Building Regulation requirements.

By adopting the Rockwool SoundPro solutions specifiers can meet and exceed the required ADE standards for Internal floors.

Intermediate Floors (within the same dwelling)

The Approved Document E 2003 Edition – Resistance to the passage of sound, introduced standards for internal floors in dwelling houses, flats and rooms for residential purposes. By adopting the Rockwool SoundPro solutions you can meet and exceed the required ADE standards for Internal and Separating floors.

The new Approved Document E (2003 edition) introduces, for the first time, performance criteria for Internal floors within the same building and dwelling (E2).This is based on laboratory rating (Rw) for which a minimum value for airborne sound insulation of Rw 40dB is required. Installing Rockwool Flexi slab between timber or metal floor  joists can meet this performance requirement.

A Separating floor is defined as a floor that separates adjoining dwelling houses, flats or rooms used for residential purposes. The Part E requirement for separating floors is subject to both airborne and impact sound regulations. Minimum airborne sound of 45dB is required (plus additional Ctr correction factor for low frequency noise). In addition separating floors also require a maximum 62dB impact sound insulation. Rockfloor will assist in achieving this performance requirement.

Flanking sound
A major cause of reduced acoustic performance in
separating floors is due to Flanking paths via the surrounding structure rather than a direct path through the floor.

Good practice detailing at the design stage, especially at key junctions, together with good workmanship will minimise this
effect and optimise performance levels. Guidelines of good practice detailing at key junctions are provided throughout the new Approved document E.

Exposed Intermediate Floors are by definition suspended and are only required to incorporate thermal insulation if the floor divides a heated space from an unheated space or outside air.

Rockwool Flexi  or RW5 rigid slabs are designed to provide the maximum thermal benefits for exposed  intermediate floors  and soffits.

The maximum allowable Elemental U values for exposed soffits are; (W/m2K)
. England, Wales 0.25
. Scotland 0.25
. Republic of Ireland 0.25
