Acoustic conditions within schools can have a profound impact on pupil's learning and staff performance. Requirement E4 from Part E of Schedule 1 to The Building Regulations 2000 (as amended) states that:

“Each room or other space in a school building shall be designed and constructed in such a way that it has the acoustic conditions and the insulation against disturbance by noise appropriate to its
intended use.”

The normal way of satisfying Requirement E4 of The Building Regulations is to demonstrate that all the following performance standards have been met.
. indoor ambient noise levels
. airborne sound insulation between spaces
. airborne sound insulation between corridors or stairwells and other spaces
. impact sound insulation of floors
. reverberation in teaching and study spaces
. sound absorption in corridors, entrance halls and stairwells
. speech intelligibility in open-plan spaces.

The behaviour of sound within rooms is linked to the room size and shape, together with the performance of the internal surfaces and the construction type. It is important to use the most suitable materials and obtain the right "acoustic balance" between the different surfaces. The use of the correct mixture of acoustically "hard" and "soft" materials will create the "room acoustics" appropriate for the purpose of the room.

The Rockfon acoustic ceilings and sound absorption solutions can be used to meet the Building Bulletin 93 requirements for reverberation time and speech intelligibility. The standards are particularly appropriate for nursery schools, primary and secondary schools. Schools for "special needs" have even more stringent requirements. Rokfon solutions create the right interior acoustic environment and personnal comfort and learning conditions.

Rockwool school solutions aim to provide better acoustic conditions in schools that facilitate clear communication of speech between teacher and student, and between students, and do not interfere with study activities.
